From AI to automation, these athenaOne® updates help you focus on patient care
The Summer 2025 athenaOne release is here, and it’s packed with more than 170 new features and enhancements designed to simplify the practice of care for both clinicians and staff. This update brings a host of effort- and click-saving improvements to athenaOne’s EHR, practice and revenue cycle management, and patient engagement products, as well as enhancements supporting interoperability and data exchange.
About a third of the updates are a direct result of customer feedback. Our platform allows them to submit ideas and vote on the features that matter most to them, ensuring that their voices shape the tools they use every day. After all, obsessing over customers is one of our company values.
Check out some of the highlights from the Summer 2025 release and learn how these enhancements can help practices drive efficiency and improve patient care.
Executive Summary: View practice performance at a glance
Practice owners and managers looking for a quick readout of their practice’s financial performance and operational efficiency can now access a new Executive Summary report within athenaOne’s Insights Dashboard. This powerful tool, available now for small practices and currently in development for larger ones, features simplified navigation and key performance indicators displayed through intuitive charts and tables. By reviewing metric descriptions, users will see information about how to interpret the metric and identify steps for improvement. This feature not only saves time but also empowers practices to make informed decisions that can lead to better patient outcomes and streamlined operations. Early testers say they appreciate the all-in-one feeling of the Executive Summary and the actionable recommendations it provides.
Predicted labels: AI conquers a tedious task
One valuable application of AI in healthcare is to reduce the amount of time practice staff needs to spend on repetitive tasks. The new feature Predicted Document Labels for Admin Documents, which was suggested by a customer, harnesses the power of AI to streamline the chore of labeling administrative documents. With this release, athenaOne leverages AI to label external faxes, either applying a label automatically or suggesting labels for the user to choose from. Instead of spending time typing each label manually, users can simply select from the suggestions. What’s more, the AI learns from user corrections, improving its accuracy and relevance over time. As users interact with the system, it becomes increasingly adept at understanding and adapting to their needs.
Feedback on the predictive feature has been overwhelmingly positive, with one customer noting, “It’s a lot quicker because I don’t have to search for the label.” Since its rollout, the feature has been implemented at more than 950 practices — and not a single customer has requested to shut it off. Future releases will expand predicted document label functionality to clinical documents and imaging documents.

Rx reconciliation: Automatically archive short-term prescriptions
Any time a patient is prescribed a short-term course of medication, eventually that item will need to be moved from the active prescription list to Historical status. Instead of relying on staff to manage this work manually, the Short Term Medications Auto-Reconcile feature allows the prescriber to indicate that a medication prescribed for short durations — typically fewer than 21 days — should be automatically moved to Historical status after the number of days they select at the time of prescription. The result: less time and effort spent on medication reconciliation and more time focusing on patient care.
By automating this process, we can not only reduce the administrative burden on healthcare providers but also minimize the risk of errors that can occur during manual reconciliation. The feature addresses a top request from our customers and received more than 1,500 votes in the Success Community, athenahealth’s customer engagement platform.
Interoperability: Expand data exchange with TEFCA connectivity
No clinician is an island. Patients seek care across numerous sites, and interoperability is a critical capability for practices of all sizes that need access to the patients’ full longitudinal record. Our migration to the CommonWell Ellkay Platform for TEFCA connectivity enhances athenaOne’s current Patient Record Sharing functionality, allowing our customers to exchange records seamlessly with a broader network of connected care sites, so they’ll have the patient data they need to deliver care.
An advantage of connecting to TEFCA is that it enables practices to respond to Patient Access data requests. For patients who want to receive their athenahealth data via a Personal Health Record (PHR) app of their choice, this migration ultimately supports them in taking an active role in managing their health. Migration will happen automatically for athenaOne practices enrolled in Patient Record Sharing; there’s no need for the practice to make configuration changes of its own.
Multiple encounter billing: Easily manage linked appointments
An episode of care can involve multiple encounters – and that can lead to complications and extra work when appointments need to be scheduled or canceled. To drive revenue cycle efficiency and reduce client work, we’ve improved our Multi-Encounter Billing functionality so that users can manage linked appointments after a claim has been created. By enabling users to add or remove appointments from multi-encounter claims without having to delete the existing claim and start over, we significantly reduce the time and effort involved in claims management. Ultimately, this improvement enhances operational efficiency and can also contribute to a healthier bottom line for practices.
