Bob Segert, Chairman & CEO

Bob Segert joined athenahealth in February 2019 after serving as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Virence Health. He is a seasoned leader with a passion for understanding and delivering on the needs of the customer, a relentless commitment to operational excellence, and a track record for driving outstanding results.


Bob has over 20 years of leadership experience in the software & IT services industry – spanning across sales, marketing, operations, and corporate strategy. He has served as Executive Chairman of Aspect Software and President and CEO of Expert Global Solutions, where he scaled the company’s global footprint and achieved market-leading positions in customer relationship management and business process outsourcing services. He was also President and CEO of GXS, Inc., the world’s largest B2B cloud integration platform.


He currently serves on the Board of Directors of EPAM Systems, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra Board of Governors and Foundation Board. He also sits on the executive committee of the Vogel Alcove, which supports early childhood development of homeless children in Dallas. Bob holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University.

Richard Barnwell, Senior Vice President, Product Engineering

Richard Barnwell serves as SVP of Product Engineering at athenahealth, responsible for leading the engineering teams developing our core products. Richard came to athenahealth in March 2018 from Microsoft, where he was a partner engineering manager, leading teams which develop unified endpoint management and security products.


Earlier in his career at Microsoft, Richard led teams developing the Dynamics 365 business applications. Prior to Microsoft, Richard held engineering leadership roles at a number of early-stage companies, working in a variety of domains including indoor location, industrial Internet of Things, and eCommerce. Richard started his career at Dun & Bradstreet software, working on business applications.

Jessica Collins, Senior Vice President, General Counsel

Jessica has served as our Senior Vice President, General Counsel since June 2018, after joining athenahealth in September 2016.  Prior to her time with athena, she held a number of legal leadership positions at Keurig Green Mountain, Inc. and Raytheon. Earlier in her career, Jessica was a partner in the Corporate Group at Brown Rudnick LLP, where she concentrated on business and securities law.

Bret Connor, Senior Vice President, Chief Customer Officer

Bret Connor has served as our Senior Vice President, leading Customer Success since joining athenahealth in August 2017. He oversees our customer success organization that supports and enables our clients in their journey to transform healthcare by utilizing our cloud-based platform and services to improve their revenue capture, deliver better healthcare outcomes, and spend more time providing care. Prior to joining us, Bret served in executive leadership roles at VMware, Inc. and McKinsey & Company. Bret received his B.A. in economics from the University of Chicago and his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.

Dan Haley, Interim Chief Human Resources Officer

Dan Haley joined athenahealth in 2012 and has served in a number of leadership positions. Prior to his current role, Dan served as athenahealth’s Chief Legal and Administrative Officer. Before joining athenahealth, Dan was a partner at the global law firm McDermott, Will & Emery. He has held senior positions in a number of statewide political campaigns, in Massachusetts state government, and at several federal political committees. Dan is a frequent blogger, speaker, and commentator on health IT and related issues, and served on the board of directors of eHealth Initiative. He received his bachelor’s degree from Middlebury College, and his law degree from Harvard Law School.

Matt Levesque, Senior Vice President, Technology Enabled Services

Matt Levesque joined athenahealth in 2007 and since February 2018 has been responsible for athenahealth’s revenue cycle, clinical, and integration operations. Since July 2015, as a representative of athenahealth, Matt has served on the board of directors of the Committee on Operating Rules for Information Exchange, or CORE, a collaborative initiative launched by the Council for Affordable Quality Healthcare, Inc., or CAQH. CAQH CORE is governed by industry-wide stakeholders focused on the development and adoption of national operating rules for healthcare administrative transactions. He received his B.S. in Finance from Siena College.

Marc A. Levine, Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer

Marc Levine joined athenahealth in December 2017 and has served as our Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Accounting Officer and Treasurer since January 2018. Previously, Mark served as the executive vice president and chief financial officer of JDA Software Group, Inc., a privately-held supply chain provider of software and SaaS solutions, where he was responsible for the finance and accounting, legal, workplace, purchasing, and IT  activities for the company. Prior to joining JDA, Mark spent 25 years in a variety of senior financial leadership roles with Hewlett Packard Company. He received his bachelor’s degree from Emory University and his M.B.A. from the University of Connecticut School of Management.

Tim O’Brien, Senior Vice President, Transformation and Business Operations and Interim Chief Marketing Officer

Tim O’Brien joined athenahealth in 2011, and prior to his current role, served as our Chief Marketing and Commercial Operations Officer since January 2016. Prior to that role, he formerly served as athena’s Vice President of Corporate Development, where he oversaw business development, integration efforts, and marketing initiatives. Tim has held a variety of positions within athenahealth, including Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Vice President of Enterprise Solutions and Operations. Tim began his career at Arthur Andersen LLP. He received his B.A. in finance from The Catholic University of America and his M.B.A. from Babson College.

Jon Porter, Executive Vice President, Chief Product Officer

Jonathan Porter has served as our Chief Product Officer since May 2018, integrating the product strategy and product management of our Network and Core Services. Prior to becoming Chief Product Officer, Jonathan served in a variety of leadership roles, overseeing the development of number of products and services as the More Disruption Please accelerator and marketplace programs to advance our mission of transforming healthcare. Prior to joining athenahealth, Jonathan founded and served as the CEO of Healthcare Data Services LLC, a healthcare software technology company, which we acquired in September 2012. He received his B.S. in accounting from Babson College.

Karl Salnoske, Senior Vice President, Cloud Engineering and Operations

Karl joined athenahealth in February 2019 following his time as Senior Vice President of Engineering and Cloud Operations at Virence Health. He is a senior technology and operating executive with more than 20 years of experience across multiple sectors, including healthcare, higher education, and telecom.


Before joining us, Karl was at Laureate Education, Inc. as Executive Vice President and the company’s first Chief Information Officer. Prior roles includes senior leadership positions with IBM, Schering-Plough, and McKinsey & Company. Karl holds a Bachelor of Science from Virginia Tech.
