Tom Cowhey joined athenahealth’s leadership team as the chief financial officer in June 2025. In this role, he oversees all accounting, actuarial, financial, investor relations, risk management, and tax activities.

Prior to joining athenahealth, Tom served as executive vice president and chief financial officer of CVS Health, responsible for the company’s financial operations and investment activities. Before CVS Health, he was chief financial officer of Surgery Partners, a leading operator of surgical facilities and ancillary services in the United States, overseeing all financial operations, IT, revenue cycle, and procurement. Earlier in his career, Tom held various senior finance roles at Aetna, managing the U.S. health plan business and leading key initiatives such as outsourcing the pharmacy business to CVS/Caremark and the proposed Humana acquisition.

Tom holds a B.A. in Economics from Wesleyan University and an MBA with a concentration in health sector management from Duke University.
