Community Hospital Goals and Strengths

Community Hospital Goals and Strengths

Community hospital goals usually include caring for underserved individuals (because of those individuals’ geography or economic status) as well as service to the community as a whole. In a Becker’s Hospital Review article entitled “Why We Need to Keep Our Community Hospitals Strong,” Chuck Lauer, the former publisher of Modern Healthcare, says that:

The community hospital will be relevant as long as health care stays local, and I don't think that's going to change anytime soon. In fact, localness and people-power seem more important than ever in what we do. We now talk about "patient-centered care" and hospitals that can align with each physician on staff. A well functioning community hospital commands patient loyalty and binds itself closely to its physicians.

Community hospital strengths include:

  • Involvement in all aspects of the care continuum
  • Historical involvement with community health programs
  • Long-term relationships with patients and physicians
  • The ability to run lean and change nimbly
  • The ability to adhere to good processes hospital-wide
Despite these community hospital strengths, in the age of increasing health care costs, hospital mergers, and vast health care systems, community hospitals continually face challenges and problems that threaten their viability.
