The near future of interoperability will be a mix of point-to-point interfaces, connections to viable HIEs and software hubs, and third-party services and web-based APIs to cloud-based platforms. Important patient information may travel through several channels before arriving at its destination to achieve EHR interoperability.

Forward looking HIT vendors look to cloud-based application programming interfaces (APIs) that are open to connect with any entity that provides value. New HIT solutions are based on single-instance, multi-tenant platforms, rather than legacy software. Because cloud-based platforms do not require traditional interfaces, they can build a single connection between two vendors (typically using a web-based API). With this functionality, any client on the network can use that connection, which enables the seamless sharing of patient records — an outcome unique to true EHR interoperability.
