The athenahealth COVID-19 dashboard: High-risk patients

athenahealth is providing insight into the potential impact of the COVID-19 pandemic by identifying concentrations of high-risk patient populations across our nationwide network. This map displays information about the percentage of patients who are at higher risk of severe illness if they contract COVID-19. Use the interactive graphic above to take a closer look at each U.S. county.

Our methodology: Using electronic health record (EHR) and billing data at the county level, this dashboard reports on patients who are aged 65+ or have been diagnosed with any of nine chronic conditions associated with severe illness in COVID-19 patients.

Older people and those with certain underlying conditions are at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Severe illness involves lower respiratory tract disease requiring hospitalization and possibly intensive care. The risk of death is significantly higher for these patients.

The high-risk health conditions included here are based on information from the CDC. Patients are considered to be at higher risk if they are aged 65+ or documented as having any of cardiovascular disease, lung disease, diabetes, cancer, chronic kidney disease, liver disease, severe obesity; or who smoke or are immunocompromised. This list is not exhaustive of all potential risk factors, but reflects the most recent CDC guidance. For more information, please visit the CDC website.
