AI-native capabilities offer labor-saving wins to practices

The athenaOne® fall 2025 product release has a theme, and it’s coming through loud and clear: reducing workload for medical practices is the name of the game. This release includes new AI-native technology designed to support clinicians and staff so they can work efficiently and focus on patients – not the computer screen.

The fall 2025 release includes 185 innovative features and enhancements1 that touch all aspects of athenaOne: from electronic health records and revenue cycle management to patient engagement and platform improvements. Among these, 75 ideas (about 40%) originated in athenaOne customer feedback.2 Thanks to the Voice of the Customer program, customers can submit their ideas and vote on the ones they’re most eager to see.

Check out some highlights from this release.

Meet patients where they are with flexible new options in athenaTelehealth

Several of the features in the fall 2025 release expand the power of our telehealth solution.

  • Participant management: This capability gives clinicians the flexibility to admit and remove patients on a telehealth call. It also provides a better “waiting room” experience for the patient, and allows providers to send patients a message if they’re running late.
  • Group sessions enabled: Clinicians will now be able to accommodate multiple patients in the same athenaTelehealth session – think group therapy sessions and other encounters involving two or more patients.
  • athenaPatient® app integration: This update gives patients using the app a smoother experience when joining a telehealth call, keeping them in the app rather than having to launch an external web browser.

Uncover what matters with AI-enabled summaries of external clinical documents

The new release enhances athenaOne’s Patient Record Sharing capability with AI-enabled document summaries. Patient Record Sharing, found within ChartSync, gives clinicians access to clinical documents received from external sources. Now, brief generative AI summaries will help users see what each document is before clicking through. Providers will spend less time hunting for useful information, because the AI summaries will show which external documents are likely to be of the most importance. In alpha and beta testing with athenaOne customers, more than 90% of these AI-enabled summaries have been marked as accurate by users.3

About 40% of the new features and capabilities originated in customer feedback. Thanks to the Voice of the Customer program, customers can submit their ideas and vote on the ones they’re most eager to see.

Streamline a burdensome task with automated insurance selection

athenaOne data has shown that when using images of patients’ insurance cards to help select the right insurance for a claim, it reduces rule holds by more than 30% and denials by about 13%.4 Now, Insurance Card Image Capture (ICIC) On-Demand enables practice staff to send patients an email or text message requesting a photo of their insurance card before or after the encounter. Best of all, once the insurance card image is captured, AI processes the image and suggests the best insurance information for billing. Then, the new insurance information is automatically used to submit or resubmit a claim. Instead of leaving claim payments uncollected for lack of time or staff, practice staff can let ICIC and automated insurance selection handle the process.

Click a whole lot less with powerful AI-suggested labels for clinical documents

athenaOne introduced suggested labels for administrative documents in the summer 2025 release. Now, suggested labels have been implemented for clinical documents as well, saving providers thousands and thousands of clicks by offering several recommendations to choose from. In beta testing, clinical suggested labels have had 89% “top 1” accuracy – in other words, users agree that the top recommendation is the correct one. This has been a huge labor-saving win for customers.

New productivity analytics to support clinicians

Knowledge is power, and the fall 2025 release adds valuable clinical task productivity analytics to athenaOne’s Insights Dashboards. Practices will now be able to track clinicians’ open task count, average item age, and lag to first patient response alongside other metrics in the Insights Dashboards. The value is twofold: Not only can these metrics help improve care team productivity, they can also help practices identify clinicians who might be struggling to complete tasks in a timely way. That knowledge can open the door for outreach and support for providers before fatigue or burnout starts to adversely affect patient care.

This Healthcare IT platform prioritizes customer success

How soon will athenaOne customers be able to put these updates to work? They already can. That’s what it means to have a cloud-based Healthcare IT platform: all users have access to the latest version of our solution without needing to install additional software.

We make sure our customers always have the best tools at their disposal to deliver exceptional patient care every day. With AI-native technology, practices using athenaOne can expect smooth, efficient functionality that helps them save work, clicks, and effort. See what sets athenaOne apart.
