We are excited to announce our 2nd annual athenaScholars scholarship program! athenaScholars was launched in 2020 to support dependents of athenistas (athenahealth employees), who are pursuing an undergraduate degree in the healthcare or science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education fields.

With the mission of expanding access to high-quality healthcare, and to support STEM education, our goal for these scholarships is to support our future generations of providers and technologists today – so they can help drive access to high-quality healthcare tomorrow. In this way, we aim to advance our vision of creating a thriving ecosystem that delivers accessible, high quality and sustainable healthcare for all.

Last year’s winners have already made inspiring strides toward their STEM careers, and we are excited to following the journeys of this year’s winners!

This year, we received a total of 67 applications from students across the globe (eight from the athenahealth India (AHI) offices and 59 from our U.S. offices) who are pursuing an education in fields ranging from nursing and engineering to chemistry, biology, and physical therapy. The application questions centered around two short answer and two essay questions that prompted the responses, (1) how community service or academic activities shaped their decision to want to pursue a degree in healthcare/STEM, and (2) how they believe Diversity & Inclusion will play a role in their chosen career path. athenahealth’s diverse North American and AHI review committees, consisting of 15 athenahealth employees across different cohorts, divisions, geographies, and backgrounds, carefully and thoughtfully reviewed all de-identified applications over the course of several weeks to help make the difficult decision of selecting the award winners.

Our athenaScholars program is just one way in which we hope to further address pervasive societal barriers to healthcare and enrich the health of patients and communities across the country -- both today and in the future.”
