The Affordable Care Act has been in the news for newly enrolling more than 16 million Americans in coverage, but did you know more than 30 million still remain uninsured? Even more might make too much to qualify for Medicaid, but still don’t make enough to afford their insurance or healthcare costs. In states that expanded Medicaid (only about half), a family of four that makes $34,000 annually makes too much to qualify, yet there are estimates that the same family of four spends $24,671 on healthcare each year. That doesn’t leave much for food, education, or other living expenses.
How is athena helping?
We’re honored to provide donations of our network-enabled services to eligible free clinics across the country. There are only about 1,200 of these free and charitable clinics focused exclusively on providing quality care to uninsured Americans. Their mission to support the underserved is a natural extension of our backbone and mission to help providers do well. These clinics are funded only by donations and grants, and have been called the safety net for the safety net, utilizing primarily volunteers to provide a wide range of medical services, all without billing payers/insurance.
One client in particular, New Braunfels Volunteers in Medicine, is actively caring for about 1,000 patients in New Braunfels, Texas, where there are an estimated 14-21,000 uninsured without a place to turn for primary care. Since going live last year, athenaNet has enabled their staff and volunteer providers to collaboratively care for these patients, many with multiple chronic diseases, while maintaining a high level of quality care. They even utilize some of the same metrics and quality measures as others across the Network!
A video highlighting the inspirational work of New Braunfels Volunteers in Medicine and the athenaGives program is in the running for a corporate citizenship award from the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship.
