athenaResearch Study: The Current State of Patient Portal Adoption

by David Clain, Manager of athenaResearch

In an effort to improve health outcomes and patient quality of life at lower costs, provider groups around the country are increasingly focused on developing a deeper connection with patients. Expanding digital engagement is central to this effort, with online at the center of virtual physician-provider relationships. Portals offer patients immediate access to their health records, allow them to schedule appointments and pay bills, and enable secure conversations with providers.

With Patient Portals, Doctors Win Too

by Jeff A. Drasnin, MD, FAAP, pediatrics

Dr. Jeffrey Singer, a surgeon in Arizona, recently  in the Wall Street Journal that he blames electronic health records (EHRs) for damaging his connection with patients. It’s an awful feeling for any physician. We all wish for longer appointments, fewer charts, and more time spent looking patients squarely in the eyes, rather than into our keyboards. After 40 years of Practicing, I Leave You With This

by Reavis T. Eubanks, MD

After more than 40 years as a solo family physician, I closed my practice on November 30, 2014. As I prepared for that last day, I couldn’t help but reflect on how medicine and the health care industry have changed since I started in late ‘70’s. Some moments have stuck with me more than others – I think they’re worth emphasizing here, sharing the wisdom of a retired physician with those early in their career.

Why the Flexibility and Immediacy of Technology Are Essential To My Patients' Satisfaction

by Craig Tidwell, MD, obstetrics and gynecology

Just about every obstetrician has heard it: “I think that I'm 21 weeks," or "I think that I'm 26 weeks." When a pregnant patient walks into the labor and delivery or the emergency room, I can’t rely on “think.” I must be able to pull that information up immediately and be able to tell them, "No, you're actually this many weeks.

Patient Engagement: Going Beyond the Patient Portal

by Rhian Gregory, Senior Manager, Product Marketing

More than ever, market forces are influencing provider behaviors in how they practice medicine. Helping providers preserve the sanctity of their interactions with patients at the moment of care now takes on a new dimension — moving that connection to patients beyond the exam room, and beyond the four walls of any practice.

Heading into 2014, we knew we had our work cut out for us at our practice: We’d be attesting to Use Stage 2 and transitioning to ICD-10 all within the same year.
