2015-2016 Flu Season in Review

by Anna Zink, Data Engineer, athenaResearch

After five weeks of declining influenza-like-illness rates, it appears that the 2015-2016 flu season may finally be coming to a close. It has been the latest-breaking flu season we’ve seen in the last three years and an interesting one to follow.

Flu Trends Report: Has the 2015-2016 Season Finally Peaked?

by Anna Zink, Data Engineer, athenaResearch

Has the 2015-2016 flu peaked? It’s too early to tell. But after nine consecutive weeks of increasing influenza-like-illness (“ILI”) rates, athenaResearch is gratified to see a decrease in what has been an unusually late flu season.

Flu Trends Report: National Rates Remain Modest While West Spikes in Pediatrics

by Anna Zink, Data Engineer, athenaResearch

Influenza-like-illness or “ILI” affects on average about 5% to 20%1 of the US population each year. The CDC collects ILI data from all over the country in order to monitor ILI, which can spread quickly and result in mild to severe illness. At athenahealth we provide timely regional and national data on flu trends from our cloud-based network of providers. For this analysis, we looked at flu activity from a continuous sample of practices on athenahealth since at least 2013 so we could compare regional and national ILI rates across flu seasons. We measure ILI by the proportion of primary care visits with a diagnosis of ILI, referred to as the ILI rate.

athenaResearch Weekly Flu Report: Diagnosis Lower Than Past Seasons

by Anna Zink, Data Engineer, athenaResearch

Curious about this year’s flu season? Data from athenahealth’s cloud-based network allows us to track regional and national flu rates in near real time. The athenaResearch team monitors flu rates each week from over 23,000 primary care providers in order to provide timely information on how the flu is trending this season. We also provide data to several researchers working to modernize disease surveillance and help doctors and health departments anticipate the demands of their patients and residents. Most recently, our data is being leveraged on Boston Children’s Hospitals’ HealthMap Flu Trends site to help improve flu predictions.

athenaResearch Study: The Current State of Patient Portal Adoption

by David Clain, Manager of athenaResearch

In an effort to improve health outcomes and patient quality of life at lower costs, provider groups around the country are increasingly focused on developing a deeper connection with patients. Expanding digital engagement is central to this effort, with online at the center of virtual physician-provider relationships. Portals offer patients immediate access to their health records, allow them to schedule appointments and pay bills, and enable secure conversations with providers.

EHR Data Shows Higher Measles Vaccination Rates across California and Illinois

by Josh Gray, VP of athenaResearch

Considering the public’s focus on measles this season, we used data from athenahealth’s cloud-based (EHR) service to determine if we could detect an uptick in vaccination rates for children cared for by pediatricians and family practitioners around the country.

Did the CDC Advisory on Use of Antivirals Affect Provider Prescribing Patterns?

by Stewart Richardson, athenaResearch Data Engineer

The 2014-2015 flu season has been particularly severe, as indicated by data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the athenahealth network. Tracking more than 20,000 primary care providers on athenahealth’s cloud-based network, at 4.5% of patient visits for the week ending Saturday, December 27, 2014, a level that’s on par with the severe 2012-2013 season. According to the CDC, this is mostly due to the predominance a mutated H3N2 strain of the flu virus, which rendered this flu season’s vaccine less effective.
