The ACA Has Improved Access to Care for Low-Income Patients

by Josh Gray, VP of athenaResearch

As Barack Obama’s presidency draws to a close, we anticipate growing discussion of his legacy. Much of that discussion will focus on the Affordable Care Act (ACA), his signature legislative accomplishment. The legislation is complex and in some cases ineffective and cumbersome. It can be argued, for example, that the complexity of the ACA favors the same high-cost, legacy health care players that the bill was designed to address.

Primary Care and Surgery Collections Grow Under the Affordable Care Act

by Anna Zink, Data Engineer, athenaResearch

In the lead-up to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), physicians were understandably concerned about how the legislation would affect their finances. In our latest ACAView research, we looked to find the answer by observing changes in physician practice collections in 2014 (the year the coverage expansion provisions of the ACA went into effect). For this report, we used a national sample that consists of roughly 5,400 primary care providers and 2,000 surgeons, the large majority working in community settings and have used athenahealth’s practice management software and services since 2012.

To examine how the ACA is affecting community medicine the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has been partnering with athenahealth on ACAView, an initiative to measure the impact of the ACA on medical practices.

ACAView: Physician Data on Impact of Health Reform in 2014

by Josh Gray, VP of athenaResearch

Over the past year, our athenaResearch team has been working with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) on ACAView, an initiative that provides researchers, policymakers and the public with regular updates on how the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is affecting physician provider practices. To accomplish this, we curate and analyze data from a nationally distributed sample of 16,000 providers on the athenahealth cloud-based network. This gives us a timely view into national physician practice patterns and an ideal platform for measuring the impact of health care reform on the day-to-day practice of medicine.
