When Midlands Orthopaedics, a member of Arcis Healthcare, LLC, wanted to pioneer the performance of a new hip resurfacing procedure in their outpatient surgery center, athenaCollector was instrumental in gathering the data needed by payers to authorize payment for this innovative procedure.

[MUSIC PLAYING] Well, this summer I was doing a lot of hiking and I noticed my left hip started to bother me. So I had it checked out by Dr. Gross. I looked into total hip replacement versus the hip resurfacing. I'm just looking forward to walking for long periods of time without pain.

Kevin Bishop is a young man. He's 50 years old. He has premature hip arthritis. And when you get to that stage, it's not a matter of just taking arthritis pills.

My specialty is joint replacement and I've got a sub-specialty within that. I really am pioneering hip resurfacing in this country. It's different than a hip replacement. It still replaces the surfaces of the joint, but it removes a lot less bone and you're leaving the hip more mechanically normal. It's a type of replacement that's geared towards a younger, more athletic person, and hip resurfacing can allow them to return to full impact sporting activities.

Midlands Orthopedics went live on the Collector product in 2006. It was far and away different and better, immediately, from anything we had used before. The concept of everyone being on the same network and learning from each other's experience and for athena to be able to monitor what we're all doing all the time is really unheard of in this industry. One of the benefits athena has provided to Midland Orthopedics has been the data that it provides us to grow our practice.

Let me see you again in three months, all right?

OK.

We are really focused on being a solution to make health care more affordable.

Thank you.

Take care.

All righty.

One of the ways we have met that goal is by offering hip resurfacing procedures in our surgery center. We're blessed to have physicians that are very skilled in that procedure. And they approached me and said, do we think we could get a payer in the area to actually reimburse us for doing this in the surgery center?

By doing these procedures in the outpatient setting, Midlands feels like we are cutting down on the complications, such as infection. We have the same staff. They all know the technique and the habits that the surgeons have. And so there's much more efficiency, which is beneficial to the patient.

athena's tools in Collector, particularly, were instrumental to me in being able to gather the data to take to the payer to make the case that this is a win-win for them and for us on both the cost and a quality perspective. I can't really imagine pulling that together from another system as easily as I was able to do with athena.

[INAUDIBLE].

We've been fortunate to have a good relationship with a large parent estate and they've seen our data and they believe that we can do it. And to my knowledge, it's the first time in the world that anybody has done this as an outpatient surgery.

Good morning.

Morning, doctor.

How you doing, sir?

I'm fine. How are you doing?

Good.

Good.

You all set for surgery?

Yes.

OK. So the operation is very routine. I've done 3,000 of these. It takes about an hour and a half, on average, to do the operation.

And when we're done, the patient has a four inch incision. And within an hour or so, he's pretty wide awake. And the legs are still numb, so he's still comfortable.

I'll come check on you in a little while.

OK. So far, so good.

Here's Kevin. This is the first time he's getting up to walk on his crutches.

Once the patient's legs start moving-- usually about four six hours have passed by this time-- we have a trainer start walking with him up and down the hall and going up stairs and learning some little exercises.

He's taking his first steps.

I'm looking forward to getting back to a normal life where I can be more active. I'm very pleased.

In the past, it's been 24 hours in the hospital. Now, six or eight hours in the surgery center, and they go home. It's changed dramatically.
