Behind the Scenes with athenahealth’s Meaningful Use Support Team

athenahealth has made it a company priority to guarantee that our eligible clients achieve and get paid for Meaningful Use. 100% of our clients are using the latest version of athenaClinicals, an ONC-ATCB-certified EHR, and we have dedicated significant resources, people and technology to helping clients reap the rewards from this federal incentive program. We are essentially two months away from D day.

I am looking at data right now and it is kind of scary.

The team is essentially spinning thirty plates at once here and keeping it going.

There are a lot of practices who are paralyzed by fear. What am I supposed to do? What does it look like? How can I change this?

We asked the team to work twice as hard.

We are eating, sleeping, drinking, and breathing Meaningful Use.

We are on the hook because the guarantee essentially guarantees your payment for Meaningful Use.

Our CEO is putting things like the guarantee in place that forced us to think differently about the problems and how we are going to solve these problems. It pushes us to consider different types of solutions.

If you are not going to be on athenaCommunicator and you are not going to have interface, then obviously this is what you have to do.

Meaningful Use guarantees really a motivation for our team because we know we have no choice but to make sure that each of our providers are able to demonstrate Meaningful Use out of the gate.

For a provider to demonstrate Meaningful Use they need to demonstrate compliance against twenty different measures. Fifteen of those measures are required for all providers.

Meaningful Use is pastel, you either do it or you don’t do it. Even if you have one measure that isn’t there, it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t count.

It is a complex program, but what it is really about is making sure that you are taking advantage of everything that your EHR has to offer. We want to make sure our practices can do that and get paid for doing that.

Nearly every employee at athenahealth has worked on Meaningful Use from our product team and our developers making sure our application supports Meaningful Use to our Clinicals Intelligence team making sure we have got appropriate content, professional services, account management client support working with our clients—everyone is working to make sure that we cross the finish line.

Welcome to this week’s Meaningful Use War Room.

We have three hundred enrollment tasks that we are looking to complete.

The more that we can narrow...

The War Room is the brain of the organization, the nerve center. There is a tremendous amount of information flowing all the time and the War Room is really where it all starts.

We have got people from so many different teams and we are able to kind of harness that collective intelligence, break the walls down, and work together for a common goal. Being cloud based really helps athena to see all of our practices in a single snapshot and monitor those trends over time to see how they are performing.

We can make changes to the software, roll it out and influence what their behavior, what their workflow looks like and whether they are satisfying a measure by changing the tool that they are using on a day-to-day basis.

The combined menu measures has been averaging about 82%. The lab results is 60.8% and the timely access is 99.5%.

Every week we look at every single measure of Meaningful Use and where our practices are going and how that is trending.

The Dashboard which is used for the Meaningful Use program provides a summary level view of how a provider is performing against the various measures in the program.

We have all the measures lined up in green, yellow, and red. We can see the red measures that people are really struggling with. The yellow measures are the ones where people could be doing better. The green measures are the ones that nearly all of our providers are doing fine on.

Once he approves that down here in the letter section, they need to print that out and provide it to the patient at check out.

Meaningful Use requires the entire organization to think creatively about a problem and at the end of that day when you have actually solved that problem or you have conquered that, there is a feeling you get in your belly that feels so good. We have really done something here that no one else can do.
