Technology Requirements

The following technology will enable your medical group to experience the advantages of athenaCollector® and athenaClinicals®, including athenahealth’s proprietary rules database and our convenient Web-based platform, athenaNet®.

athenaNet is a centrally hosted web based application and as such, does not require additional hardware, operating systems, database management systems (DBMS), drug information databases, clinical practice guidelines, backup utilities, third-party software applications, etc.

To experience the full advantage of athenaNet, the following technical requirements must be met prior to completing implementation. Clients are responsible for adhering to athenaNet’s technical requirements.

  • Personal Computers

    General

    • Windows XP Professional, Vista, or Windows 7 with latest Service Packs and other updates
    • Microsoft IE 7.0 or higher set as default browser (IE 8.0 or higher strongly recommended)
    • Adobe Flash Player 8 or higher
    • Audio-out sound support (speakers and/or headphones)
    • Trusted Internet sites:
      • *.athenahealth.com listed as trusted site
      • *.breakawaylearning.com (athena online learning community)
      • *.healthstream.com (athena learning management system)
    • If running McAfee VirusScan Enterprise (VSE), *.athenahealth.com must be excluded from Script Scanning
    • Pop-up blocking disabled for the above three domains
    • Users must have admin rights to download, install and run ActiveX controls from athenahealth
    • Prior to using athenaNet, individual users must click “configure your computer for athenaNet” on the athenaNet login page

    **Support contracts and extended warranties with next day replacement are recommended.**

    Desktop PC

    • Processor speed 2.0 GHz or better, min 2 GB RAM, min 10 GB free hard drive space, Network Interface Card (NIC).
    • Minimum 17” monitor, capable of 1024x768 pixel resolution for minimum acceptable performance

    Laptop, Tablet, or Convertible Laptop

    • Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (optimizes speed and battery life), 3GB RAM if running Windows Vista or 7, min 10 GB free hard drive space
    • Power outlets should be available in all areas where laptops or tablets will be used

  • Connectivity

    General

    • Allow SSL (TCP port 443) through firewalls to athenanet.athenahealth.com and backup.athenahealth.com
    • LAN access in all administrative areas
    • Available network capacity of 1.5Mb/sec per 100 users at peak utilization (Minimum: business class DSL, cable, broadband, or T1 (3.0Mb/sec per 100 users if using athenaClinicals)
    • End-to-end network round-trip time of 120ms or less from user workstation
    • Network (packet) loss of 1% or less from user workstation
    • 3rd-party network audit recommended for clients with more than 100 users

    • Citrix, Terminal or Thin Client networking environments are not supported.

    Laptops and Tablets

    • Comprehensive wireless LAN access, tested for signal strength in all areas of practice site(s), 3rd party site survey recommended
    • Redundant internet connection (backup web access) recommended (consult with your ISP for available options)
    • Consult with your IT vendor or staff to design the layout of wireless routers, access points, security, additional LAN and power outlets and additional new equipment. Wireless networks can be disrupted by radio frequencies in the public domain, including microwaves and 2.4 gHz cordless phones – the presence of these types of devices should be carefully considered when configuring and testing a wireless network.
    • Clients are responsible for troubleshooting network issues (latency, packet loss, etc.) outside of athenahealth’s firewall (i.e. from users workstations to https://athenanet.athenahealth.com.)
  • Faxing and Fax Forwarding

    • A fax machine is required to forward certain claim attachments and other correspondence to athenahealth.
    • With athenaCollector, no document storage is available beyond claim attachments; this additional capability is available to athenaClinicals customers.

    athenaClinicals

    • A fax machine is required to forward clinical documentation from the practice to the athenaNet chart (capable of handling ~150 pages per provider per day).
    • Practices currently using voice over IP (VoIP) for faxing must convert to analog fax lines to avoid stability issues associated with VoIP faxing and fax forwarding.

  • Printing

    General

    • Laser Printers capable of printing 20 pages per minute or faster
    • Printers should be within reach of users performing critical athenaNet functions (e.g. check-in, order printing, check-out)
    • Latest print drivers should be installed to ensure proper printing from athenaNet

    Label Printing

    • athenaCollector: Avery® #5160 or equivalent label paper is required
    • athenaClinicals: DYMO LabelWriter® 400/450 Turbo Professional Label Printer for PC and Mac® (SKU: 1752264) using 1” x 2-1/8” labels (DYMO 30336 or equivalent) is required. athenaClinicals supports the use of the DYMO LabelWriter Print Server (SKU: 1750630).

  • Scanning
