We are getting back to patients quicker with results.
If I’m at the hospital at 3:00 in the morning doing a delivery, and a patient calls with a problem I can log on, look up her last visit and her results.
Before I would have had to drive to the office, go in, and find her chart.

athenaClinicals,
release 9.15.1, is:

Overview
Our EHR approach is focused on positive results for your practice.
Electronic health records (EHR) can be expensive and disruptive to office workflow. Even an “out of the box” software solution, one that seems simple, can have a negative ripple effect on other in-house processes, causing extra work and costing extra money. But implementing the right EHR can be advantageous both clinically and financially.
athenaClinicalsSM is our innovative web-based EHR solution. Because it’s web-based, we’re able to incorporate changing industry requirements and government mandates faster (such as P4P rules and the HITECH Act) without expensive software updates or long delays. athenaClinicals allows for clinicians’ varied styles of encounter documentation as well, offering a lower-risk adoption path to increase your practice’s efficiency, integrity, and control.
Our EHR solution is also backed by incredible service. Our Clinicals Intelligence team continuously works to identify new Pay-for-Performance (P4P) opportunities and makes it easier for your practice to participate in them. We take the non-critical work off your hands, so your practice can operate at its peak. For example, 86% of our clients say that they eliminated chart pulls within the first year – imagine how much time your practice could reclaim by doing the same.
athenaClinicals combines:
Be more efficient and effective, while getting paid more and faster.
With athenaClinicals, you have all the information you need to be efficient at the point of care. Documents related to your patient are scanned and filed in their electronic chart. Data required for incentive program participation is presented at the time of the patient’s visit. And, because our EHR is integrated with our practice management and billing solution, your clinical documentation automatically generates billing information for your patient’s visit.
While providing the features and benefits of traditional EHRs, we stand out from traditional software offerings through our unique service model. Most software EHRs require you to take on additional work to support complete EHR adoption. Extra work could include scanning and filing all incoming faxes (including lab results and referrals) and building and maintaining electronic interfaces. With athenaClinicals, our service team scans all of your faxes and sorts them for you, so each physician has the information they need, right when they need it. Each lab result is tied to its original “order,” and if a result doesn’t appear in the expected timeframe, it gets flagged for follow up, creating a closed-loop order process.
Our interfaces to labs and pharmacies are provided free of charge, providing seamless communication, faster turnaround, and fewer hassles. We also maintain these interfaces over time, to make sure they are continuously working for you. We do all of this so you can provide better care and reduce costs. The benefits start quickly; you can begin to boost your bottom line from day one.
It’s the perfect time to invest in athenaClinicals.
A lot is changing in the world of health care. You may have financial pressure to implement an EHR at some point soon, but with the HITECH Act criteria for certification still in flux, you might be tempted to wait until regulations are finalized.
There’s no need to wait. In fact, with incentives structured as they currently are, now may be the best time to adopt an EMR/EHR and start saving money with athenaClinicals. While the terms “certified EHR,” and “meaningful use,” are still being defined, our EHR already meets widely accepted industry standards for certification established by the independent Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT). Our EHR is also well positioned to meet the conditions for “meaningful use” as defined by Health and Human Services. It allows for e-prescribing, electronic exchange of clinical data, and submission of clinical quality measures.
While government mandates and provisions will evolve and change, we are well positioned to support these changes, constantly integrating them into our web-based EHR without additional cost to your practice or disruption to your daily workflow.

Web-Based Software
Our software supports best practice workflows.
With athenaClinicalsSM, you’ll better manage all major aspects of your patient encounters. The application offers online patient record keeping, lab connectivity, clinical fax categorization and routing, and many other capabilities that make your job easier and your practice more efficient.
Well-organized and fully integrated information.
You’ll find all your information about patients, prescriptions, and insurance companies in a single database. athenaNet®’s Clinical Inbox and Workflow Dashboard give you complete visibility into your clinical and practice management processes and performance. What’s more, both tools are customizable, so you can tailor views and access information based on who needs to know what.
Data when you need it.
Reporting is an important – and often burdensome – component of quality management, and athenaClinicals makes this process both thorough and effortless. Intuitive reporting wizards give you visibility into how your practice measures up in terms of compliance with preventive guidelines, workflow lag times, and follow-through on clinical tasks.
Fast implementation with low risk of productivity loss.
Working from a structure of best practice guidelines, athenahealth’s Implementation team will help you adopt workflows that have proven successful. Unlike traditional EHRs, athenaClinicals provides a pathway of adoption, so physicians can adjust to new technology at their own pace.
Not everyone is comfortable with an immediate switch from paper to digital technology, so athenahealth’s implementation process allows physicians to continue using paper documentation while beginning to take advantage of other EHR benefits. We then equip physicians with the knowledge to migrate to the next phase of implementation and continue toward full utilization of the electronic chart. This means that transition onto our EHR platform does not risk productivity by slowing providers down with too many changes at once.
No software hassles and upfront expense.
Most EHR/EMR products are client-server based, which means they require added cost for hardware, set-up, maintenance, and third party software. Not ours. athenaClinicals is web-based, so the only tools you need are the ones you’re already using: a PC with a standard Internet browser.

Rules Database
Watch video: How our rules database works
Leverage our knowledge network for greater efficiency and economies of scale.
Behind our EHR is our intelligent athenahealth rules database. Bringing together a compilation of industry trusted data sources, our real-time database of insurance company rules and regulations includes a list of billing codes, drug formulary rules, clinical guidelines and protocols.
These rules are embedded into your patient encounters, allowing you to get the information you need – drug interaction alerts, drug allergy alerts, and information needed for reporting – while you’re in the same room with your patient. This helps you focus less on using an EHR so you can focus more on patient care.
With athenaClinicals, you have access to the most current:
- Information. Lab, pharmacy, referring physician index, clinical guidelines and protocols, drug interactions, checklists and configurable task routing rules
- Rules. The industry’s most sophisticated set of billing rules, P4P quality program rules, guideline reminders for point of care, and payer performance knowledge
- Best Practices. Workflow analysis, staffing insight, performance metrics such as provider productivity reporting and peer benchmarking

Service
Our experts deal with your paper processing, so you can focus on more profitable work.
The huge effort required to implement and transition to a traditional EHR/EMR has kept many practices from taking the leap. We make it easier. The people behind athenaClinicals assume many of your most labor-intensive and time-consuming administrative tasks. To ensure a smooth transition, a designated implementation support team is assigned to your practice, helps get you up and running, answers questions, and leads regular status meetings through the implementation and go live processes.
After your switch to athenaClinicals, our Document Services team scans and categorizes every incoming fax that is sent to your office. We match clinical documents to existing patients and patient orders, enter select data, route information to appropriate staff members, and store documents where they can be readily accessed. Additionally, athenaClinicals provides your practice tools and workflows to streamline the processing of paper generated within your office.
Through the Clinical Inbox, you can automatically see the documents that need your attention – from lab results to prescription renewal requests. Critical test results are sent directly to the appropriate doctor, eliminating delays and enabling providers to get the information they need as fast as possible.
athenahealth sends out (either electronically or via fax) reviewed and approved documents, renewals, and authorizations, freeing up your staff to do more high-value work. We build and maintain electronic connections to labs, pharmacies, hospitals and medical imaging archive systems for you at no additional charge. All of this hard work behind the scenes reduces the stress in your office, eliminates paper congestion, and improves process control.
As a part of our ongoing commitment to service, our Account Management team monitors your practice’s performance and shares our best practice insights. Added value through these consultative reviews means you have regular, fresh insight about how to improve your practice performance.
