Rule of the Month: Global Periods

Welcome back to the Rule of the Month! This month, we highlight athenahealth’s “global period” functionality.

Does your practice bill for procedures with global periods? How quickly can you come up with the answers to these questions...

  • Do you know each procedure’s number of global days for pre- and post-op care?
  • Do you remember which modifiers are for E&M codes? Remember which modifiers are for surgical procedure codes?
  • How do you tell if there is a procedure with global days lurking in the patient history? How much time does it take you to find it?

For many practices, it’s hard to keep track of these details. As a result, your practice could be losing time and money.

That’s why athenaNet does all of this for you.

When an evaluation and management code is billed within a global period (even if the procedure was nearly three months ago) athenaNet alerts you BEFORE the claim is submitted. What’s more, this alert isn’t just a reminder. It is a hyperlink to the service in question.

When you click on the alert, the text of the claim note defines your modifier choices.

And then? athenaNet prompts you to review the medical record before you make a choice. And if no modifier is appropriate per the medical documentation, athenaNet lets you submit it anyway.

The result: Automatically catching everything in the global period and billing appropriately for it, giving your practice more staff time and better profitability!

Stay tuned for next month’s rule.
