athenaMailbox: Welcome to the Fastest-Growing Segment of athenahealth

We are very excited to announce the rollout of athenaMailbox – the latest unique combination of athenahealth expertise and cutting-edge technology. “athenaMailbox is a new, add-on service that replaces the need for clients to purchase bank lockbox services,” said Cezar Wislocki-Wasecki, Program Manager at athenahealth. “athenaMailbox receives and handles mail to facilitate the deposit of checks, eliminating the need for – and expense of – an outside lockbox.”
We are in the second year of an exclusive partnership with USBank. With athenaMailbox, we receive all mail sent to the practice and use state-of-the-art machines to securely scan and upload every check directly into the bank. You can keep track of it all on athenaNet or on your online USBank account.
“One of the best things about athenaMailbox is that all our money – co-pays, payments from every payer - is in one place,” said Dr. Larry Kaskel of Deerpath Primary Care. His practice has been using athenaMailbox for almost a year, beginning as one of the Beta sites. “There’s no need for transferring or sorting – it’s all in one place, and all very quickly.”
With advanced and streamlined transaction processing, athenaMailbox will reduce processing errors, post payments faster, and – good news – athenaMailbox is a low cost alternative to other lockbox services.
“athenaMailbox has improved our cash flow problems, and simplified our money management into one account,” said Dr. Kaskel. “There’s no reason not to use it.”
athenaMailbox has been live since last June and we are currently processing 40,000 checks and depositing over $10 million per month. About 80% of new clients are adopting athenaMailbox, which has earned it a place as one of the fastest growing segments of athenahealth. This month, current clients will have the option to add athenaMailbox and we expect a similar adoption rate. By the end of the year we estimate that we’ll be processing 200,000 checks and depositing over $75 million per month.
And that’s not all. Future enhancements to athenaMailbox include back office payment processing for credit cards for patient payments, front office payment processing utilities such as electronic conversion of paper checks, and an on-line deposit reconciliation tool.
