athenista spotlight: Meet Jeffrey Brick

Originally hailing from Pittsburgh, and with a secret past as a video-multimedia artist, this month's featured athenista is a hard-working Project Manager in Professional Services. And Jeffrey Brick is not shy about sharing his most embarrassing moment at athena.

athenaPulse: What do you do in a typical day at work?
Jeffrey Brick: I have my office days when I get a good deal of work done. Sometimes these days are on the weekends and sometimes they aren't during the day at all. I have my pure training days, where I make sure I am well-rested to give our clients my full attention for an exciting and detailed journey into the functionality and best practices of athenaNet. Then I have my travel days, which often will take me through Detroit or Atlanta, which is ironic because I have yet to visit those cities beyond the airport terminals.

aP: What do you help clients accomplish?
JB: As a Project Manager, I help clients take control of their practices by making the transition from their old systems to athenaNet. I help doctors understand the workings of the business and operations side of what they do, and show how with the right effort they can make a big impact on the efficiency of their practices, including accelerating their revenue stream. I also help build self-confidence and enthusiasm of practice staff that are using advanced computer systems for the first time.

aP: What was the hardest project you worked on at athena?
JB: Mastering the advanced billing portion of the application. There are countless bright people at athena who have been here for years and are experts on the billing functionality of the application. But like most athenistas, I wasn't hired for my billing background, so I had to learn it all here. It took me a good number of months to feel comfortable with the advanced aspects of posting, billing, and all of the options and consequences of the advanced settings when setting up a tablespace for the first time.

aP: Describe something from a 'past life' that none of us may know about.
JB: For a couple of years I implemented my post-modern creative side and became a full time video-multimedia artist / VJ at electronic music and art events.

aP: Most embarrassing moment at athena?
JB: For most of us in Professional Services, we are subject to a mock training in which we are certified for client-facing trainings. When you are new, the senior members of the team can really drill down and test your knowledge of athenaNet. For my mock training, I put in a lot of extra effort and ended up creating about 200 extra PowerPoint slides than necessary and went at least an hour over agenda. It was quite embarrassing but I learned a great deal from the experience, and my friends and I who took part in my 'mock' get a good chuckle in retrospect.

aP: Favorite way to unwind after work?
JB: Step aerobics, the elliptical machine, sushi, and catching up on the emails from the day.

aP: What have you read lately, and what are you reading now?
JB: The Tipping Point, Blink, and currently reading Mark Vonnegut's The Eden Express.

aP: Your favorite "athena moment?"
JB: When clients press the 'Create Claim' button and see the word DROP.
