athenista spotlight: Meet Jennifer Furlong

Shes not a morning person but is a Jeopardy champ - and one of athenahealths ever-helpful Client Services Associates for the Southern Region. Meet Jennifer Furlong, this months featured athenista.

athenaPulse: What do you do in a typical day at work?
Jennifer Furlong: My typical day is a combination of scheduled check-in calls with clients to discuss performance and operations on athenaNet, calls from clients needing assistance, and resolving any issues that may come out of those conversations. In between all of that, I am working with my team as well as cross departmental teams to address large scale issues, reviewing ongoing projects, and occasionally taking Client Support calls.

aP: What was the most challenging project you worked on at athenahealth?
JF: This year I had the privilege of presenting at the Users' Conference, and my group members and I spent countless hours locked in conference rooms editing the presentation - we must have re-done the entire presentation at least five times. It was challenging to look at the material from the clients' perspective in order to make the presentation effective; I also have a terrible fear of public speaking, so I had to face that for the project to be successful.

aP: Most embarrassing moment at athenahealth?
JF: Right in the beginning of my athenahealth career, I had to catch a ride to work with a friend one day, which got me to work around 7AM. I'm not really a "morning person," so I decided to take advantage of the solitude in the office by catching a ten minute cat nap underneath an empty desk. My nap went a little longer than expected, and a couple of my co-workers caught me; needless to say, I've never lived that one down.

aP: Your favorite athenahealth moment?
JF: My favorite athenahealth moment is when I review a Practice Performance Review (PPR) for the first time with a new client, and we find how much better the practice is faring on athenahealth in comparison with their old system. It is very gratifying to be able to present the numbers to a client and have them say this is why we love athenahealth.

aP: One thing you wish you could change at athenahealth?
JF: Since I work with clients in the Southern region, I have only been able to meet a few of my clients face to face. One of my clients suggested that athenahealth open a branch office in the region so that we could see our clients on a more regular basis. After a long New England winter, athenahealth Florida sounds like a good idea to me!

aP: Favorite way to unwind after work?
JF: One of my favorite ways to unwind after work is to simply go driving around and explore. Since I am not a native New Englander, I have had to get to know the area by just following roads to see where they lead. I also enjoy going to the gym, curling up with a coffee and a good book, shoe shopping, trying new restaurants, and going to the driving range to improve my terrible golf game -- although I am great at mini golf!

aP: The biggest risk you ever took?
JF: Last summer I had the opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream of competing on Jeopardy, which was both scary and exhilarating. In choosing to go on the show, I knew that this was my one shot at a once in a lifetime opportunity. While I was extremely nervous going on the show, I am happy to say that I was able to answer the final Jeopardy question correctly and won a year's supply of Turtle Wax.
