Descriptions of Workshops

Based on last year’s feedback, new to this year’s User Conference is the addition of 2.5-hour workshops. These workshops are intended to cover topics in more depth than we can cover in our 55 minute sessions. Each workshop includes a combination of presentations, client experience and hands on learning. The workshops are also intended to enable clients to network and have more time to discuss topics in smaller breakout groups.

W1 Month-End Close for Cash/Modified Cash-Basis Accounting

Last year you learned about reconciliation tools and this year we are going to help you pull it together into a unified month-end close process. Join us for an in-depth review of the new Month-End Close Activity Center–a single page in athenaNet® that walks you through the month-end close process. In this workshop, you will work with your peers to solve common month-end close problems and you will walk away with the knowledge and tools to successfully tie athenaNet® transactions to your bank activity. This workshop is intended for clients that do their accounting on a cash or modified cash-basis (typically small to mid-sized groups). The workshop is designed for staff responsible for overseeing month-end close activities (cash management, unpostables and unapplied management, bank statement reconciliation, month-end reporting)

W2 Month-End Close for Accrual-Basis Accounting

The workshop is designed for staff responsible for overseeing month-end close activities (cash management, unpostables and unapplied management, bank statement reconciliation, month-end reporting).

W3 Mid-Sized and Large Practices: Effectively Manage Your Practice’s Performance

This workshop will focus on reviewing the operational policies and athenaCollector® tools that can help take a practice’s performance to the next level. An athenahealth client will present the strategies they employed to boost performance and gain more control over their practice operations. athenahealth staff will review the various tools in athenaNet® that can be used to run your practice to maximize the benefits of athenaCollectorSM Tools will be explained, and a time frame will be given to advise you on when to use these tools throughout each month, as well as who these tools will benefit most. Attendees will then break into smaller working groups to discuss how they can use these tools and share other success factors that they use at their practices. The takeaway will be a calendar/workbook that your practice can customize with athena best practices. This workshop is designed for managers and leaders in mid-sized and large practices.

W4 Small Practices (1-3 providers): Manage Your Practice Effectively Leveraging athenaCollectorSM and athenaClinicalsSM

This workshop will help you develop an approach and leverage various tools in athenaNet® to run your practice most effectively, maximizing the benefits of athenahealth services. The course will focus on both athenaCollectorSM and athenaClinicalsSM management. Each approach and tool will be explained and a time frame given to advise you on when to use it throughout each month, as well as whom it will benefit most. The takeaway will be a guide that you can use to manage your practice effectively. This workshop is targeted to practice managers, billing managers and clinical leaders.

W5 Hearts and Minds and Your Bottom Line: HR Fundamentals for a Thriving Culture

In this workshop, participants will learn the “athena way” while getting a big dose of the latest research and rolling up their sleeves to apply tested principles in their own workplace. Come and find out why workplace culture matters.

W6 Growing Your Practice

In this workshop, two successful client partners will take you through their own experiences and show you how they were able to grow their practices. From providing additional services, to recruiting, to leveraging professional staff and finally, contracting with payers – you will see the results of their successful business development plans and how athena reports and services can help you do it too. This workshop is designed for practice managers and leaders.

W7 An Insider’s View of the athenaCollectorSM Operation

This interactive workshop will focus on building a better understanding of the back office operations that make up the service side of athenaCollectorSM. While walking through an overall operations map, our specific focus will be to enhance participant understanding of the processes associated with: receiving and processing remittance and payments, posting (including ERA), resolving unpostables, denials management, appeals, and claim and remittance tracking (including CSI). Particular emphasis will be placed on exploring the various ways in which process information is tracked within athenaNet®, the ways in which problems are solved by teams inside operations (and the tools employed by those teams), and the role that clients play at various stages throughout these processing cycles.

The session will include a small group exercise designed to strengthen the understanding of the varied roles played by the athenaCollectorSM operations and to align expectations around service delivery process and standards. The goal is pull back the curtain on the inner working of our core operations processes and in doing so relate information about our operations environment to participants in such a way as to underscore the alignment of our best practices with clients’ desired business results. This session is targeted towards practice managers, billing managers and super users.

W8 athenaClinicalsSM: Using Data to Drive Performance

This workshop will share practice performance metrics developed for athenaClinicalsSM users. A review of key processes and appropriate resource allocation will help frame a discussion for driving practice performance. This session will examine practice behavior and performance trends across athenaClinicalsSM clients, and based on pre-registration, practice-specific data will be made available. We will form smaller breakout groups by specialty which will give participants an opportunity to compare metrics and collaborate to identify opportunities that can improve performance.
