It’s that time of year again. We’re excited to announce our second annual Austin Hackathon in partnership with our More Disruption Please program, coming up April 23-24 at athenahealth’s Seaholm office. This event aims to bring together smart, forward-thinkers to produce solutions that will disrupt the status quo in health IT. If you are an engineer, entrepreneur, physician, designer, scientist, patient or just interested in using your skills to drive much-needed change in health care, then we want you there. We’ll provide you with tools to make your idea a reality, including access to our developer portal and expert mentors to guide you along the way. All you have to do come ready to hack! Over the course of a mere 48 hours, we’ll gather over one hundred participants in our Austin offices and give them full access to athenahealth’s APIs (as well as some pizza and beer for sustenance) to ideate on new applications for athenahealth’s treasure trove of data.
Last year’s inaugural Austin Hackathon welcomed more than 120 hackers from all backgrounds—practicing clinicians to college students, from California to Maine. Participants brought a diverse mixture of passion and programming talent and, surprisingly, a minority with a background in health care or health IT. This reveals just how compelling health care remains for many entrepreneurs and what an untapped oil field of opportunity it presents. athenahealth believes strongly that these outsiders are going to bring some of the most disruptive, innovative solutions to an industry starved for change.
Last year’s top-scoring hacks were uniquely patient-facing and included an aggregated patient history in easy-to-engage appointment reminders; a drone which tracks the entire value chain of blood samples and other test specimens in rural areas; and a smart watch which delivers medication reminders and appointment alerts to the patient. All these innovations tapped into athenahealth’s APIs in novel ways to bring new value to providers and patients alike.
This year, we hope to bring more health care “newbies” into the fold. What game-changing innovations will they come up with? We’ll be scoring their ideas based on their potential impact on the hospital market; creativity and originality of concept; a sound, scalable business model; and usable, human-centered design.
Austin is a hotbed of entrepreneurship, utilizing technology everyday to solve health care’s most pressing problems. Will you be the next person to pioneer change? Don’t delay; sign up here!
